Restorative Justice and the Needs of Drug Abusing Youths Introduction This essay will address the challenges of substance-abusing youth offenders who have committed crime in today’s society. This paper will argue that the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) 2012 amended restorative justice aims (s. 3(1)(a)) that are likely to reduce reoffending within the substance-abusing youth offender population in today’s society. Looking at rehabilitation programs as an alternative to juvenile justice systems, especially the theories of restorative justice (Skelton, 2002) this paper will argue that it is extremely important for youth substance abusers to be involved in community based programs to reduce to the risk of recidivism and the risk to other members of society. The goal of restorative justice is to repair the harm they have caused, rather than punish the offender. The YCJA needs to continue to support rehabilitative and restorative justice strategies when dealing with the youth and their substance abuse to reduce reoffending rather than forcin g them into imprisonment with no social connections. This paper will look at how the aims of sentencing are inconsistent with s.3 and s.38 as a whole.
